TiN is the earliest hard coating used in cutting tools, with advantages such as high strength, high hardness, and wear resistance. It is the first industrialized and widely used hard coating material, widely used in coated tools and coated molds. TiN hard coating was initially deposited at 1000 ℃ by thermal CVD technology. Now it can be obtained at 500 ℃ by cathodic arc ion coating, Magnetron sputtering coating, hollow cathode ion coating, hot wire arc ion coating, PECVD and other technologies. This coating has been used for a long time in the surface hardening metal material processing and mold manufacturing of high-speed steel forming tools and molds. Depositing TiN at 500 ℃ has pioneered the deposition of coated cutting tools using ion coating technology. A variety of hard coatings with various components have been developed on this basis to meet the needs of high-end processing industry development: hard coatings with binary, ternary, and quaternary ordinary hardness based on nitrides and carbides have been developed on the basis of TiN, as well as superhard nano coatings based on these hard coatings, as well as intrinsic superhard coatings with ultra-high hardness.

The main performance indicator of hard coatings is hardness. According to the coating hardness, hard coatings can be divided into three types: ordinary hard coatings, superhard nano coatings, and intrinsic superhard/extremely hard coatings, as shown in the following table.
