Thin-film solar cells have always been the industry’s research hotspot, several conversion efficiency can reach more than 20% of thin-film battery technology, including cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film battery and copper indium gallium selenide (CICS, Cu, In, Ga, Se abbreviation) thin-film battery, occupies a certain share of the market, the other thin-film battery that is the chalcogenide battery is considered to be an important next-generation technology, let’s introduce the CdTe thin-film batteries.

CdTe is a direct bandgap semiconductor with a high absorption coefficient of sunlight and a forbidden bandwidth of 1.5eV, which is favorable for absorbing the surface solar spectrum. CdTe only needs less than 3um film thickness to absorb light effectively, which is much lower than the 150~180pm thickness of crystalline silicon, saving materials.

The TCO film and metal contact layer are deposited by CVD and PVD. Light-absorbing CdTe films are deposited by evaporation plating, sputtering and electrochemical deposition. Industrial evaporation plating method is more common, there are two main evaporation plating methods are two: narrow space sublimation method and gas phase transport deposition.
